Kinlough (KIN-LOC) is a small village in Ireland where our grandmother grew up before immigrating to America February 14, 1926. She was born in County Leitrum, Ireland. From her we learned to be proud of our heritage. We contribute our love and appreciation of Irish Dance to her.

Kinlough Academy can be traced back to the Penrose School from
the 1970's. Desmond Penrose TCRG - ADCRG was considered by
many to be the 'founding father' of Irish Dance in Central and
Weatern New York. He received his training from Maggie Kane
while growing up in Dublin, Ireland. 'Dessie' won many
Championships throughout Ireland before immigrating to
America. He established Irish dance lessons throughout the
Rochester and Syracuse area, and even now many of the current
schools established can be traced back to him.
In 1994, the Penrose School in Oswego Co. merged into the
Penrose-Young School and eventually transitioned over to solely
The Young School under direction of Charlie Young TCRG.
Charlie, also a very accomplished Championship dancer, carried
on teaching students the traditional and contemporary steps of
Irish dance.
Together they believe in carrying on the tradition of Irish dance
to further student's self esteem, sense of team work and to pass
on a beautiful part of Irish culture. Students are encouraged to
dance to enjoy the art and creativity of Irish step and
participate in competition, to their discretion, to further develop
skill and technique.

Siobhan (Smith) Rodrigues TCRG;
began dancing at the age of 3
under direction of Dessie Penrose.
She furthered her training with
instruction with Charles Young
and competed at many local,
regional and national competitions
in the Open Championship Level.
Siobhan was a competitor at the
1999 World Irish Dance Champion
ships in Ennis, Co. Clare Ireland
and was also a top ten finalist at
the 1997 Miss New York State
Scholarship Pageant, with her
Irish dancing ability. Siobhan took
over teaching Irish Dance in
Oswego County in 2004, and has
been working toward the
transition of establishing the
Kinlough Academy.
She has been assisted by her
sister Deirdre Smith, also an
experienced and accomplished
Open Championship dancer,
along the way. Deirdre began
dancing at the age of three and
has qualified to compete at the
World Irish Dance
Championships on numerous
occasions. She has competed
successfully at many regional
and national competitions from a
very young age.
